The disadvantage of not being streetwise

Imagine you are twenty seven years old. You have lived apart from your parents since you were eighteen. You have managed to arrange your own transport, find your own accomodation, pay your own bills, feed yourself, get into shouting matches with the local yobs and backpacked across Europe on your own. Now imagine that once you return home, your parents (especially your mother) think you are no more than the callow eighteen year old who left all those years ago and insist that if left to my own devices, I would starve to death in my own filth or be raped, robbed and beaten on the 'mean' streets of KL (not necessarily in that order).

There's nothing that makes me feel more juvenile than when my own mother treats me that way.

My parents were not content with giving me a ride to Bukit Bintang, they insisted on personally accompanying me and dropping me off in front of my friends. When going out with a guy friend, they can't seem to get it in their heads that he is only a friend and not my eternal soulmate.

"No. You just don't know your way around KL anymore. You haven't been back home in more than a year," my mum says when I wanted to borrow the car to go to The Curve to meet some friends.

"But, I used to go to 1 Utama all the time! It was my tempat bertendang! The Curve is just a stone's throw away from it," I said, pulling at my hair.

"Yes, but things have changed since you've been away. Wait till your sister comes back from Australia next week and she can take you," my mum replied, oblivious to my hair-pulling antics.

What?!!? Maryam? She's six years younger than me!!!

Oh, the humiliation! I get punished just because she used to go everywhere all the time and I was the good girl who stayed at home all the time. This cannot be.

My sister got a kick out of this once she heard. She smirked and said, "Mum trusts me because I'm streetwise!"

Streetwise my ass.

December's list

MUSIC Thanks to Maryam for the delights of this month's music. Be patient, Maryam, the world will one day see our special dance. 1) Presidente - KINKY . Singing in Spanish somehow makes everything sound sexier, even if he is singing about politics. Despite the oblique accusations of corruption against the Mexican president, this song is dance-floor hot and guaranteed to shake your booty. (I only use the word 'booty' online because in real life I would never get away with it.) 2) Let's Make Love And Death From Above - CSS . Bizarre title but the song works. Perfect for when returning to the home planet. 3) Ladylike - STORM LARGE & THE BALLS . They've got a name that is just dying for you to make dirty jokes about, but subject matter is serious to all girls who get the mickey taken out of them for not being 'ladylike.' Incidentally, Storm Large was one of the contestants on Rockstar: Supernova. MOVIES Surprisingly, I haven't watched many movies this mo...

A letter to the makers of Supernatural

(Dean and Sam doing a Mulder and Scully) I watched the latest episode Night Shifter yesterday and I have got to say that, in American speak, it was totally awesome. Now, because I am not the most eloquent of writers and because my brain is half-man, I shall put my points across in a list. What I like about Supernatural so far: 1. The two brothers. Yum mee, keep those two brothers coming. Especially Dean. 2. The fact that Sam and Dean constantly take the mickey out of each other. 3. Dean's one liners. "I don't do shorts, sweetheart." 4. Dean, because he is so hot. 5. The fight scenes where they use everything they've got: guns, crossbows, knives, bare knuckles, head butts. 6. The things they hunt: demons, murderous ghosts, vengeful spirits, vampires, satanic preachers, backswood crazies, telekinetic murderers. 7. The beautiful, haunting cinematography. 8. For making classic rock cool again. 9. Sam's 'guilty conscience for surfing internet porn'. 10. A ...

July 2007's list

Music 1. The View From Here (album) – TEMPERED MENTAL . They sounded good, honestly they did, when I went to see them at Laundry at the launching of their debut album a few weeks ago. Good vocalist, banging bass – I shuffled my feet a little – and I bought their album. Hey, it was going cheap at RM20 and I figured they needed to earn a living somehow. But on repeated listens, I realised that I don’t really like music like this anymore. Go back circa 1999 and I would probably be headbanging to their songs, along with all the other nu-metal music that were making waves then, but currently, I’ve gotta say no. Oooh, Tempered Mental might object to me calling them nu-metal but that’s what it sounds like to me. Good effort, but not my cup of tea. You can check them out on MySpace . Stand out tracks: Recall 2. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (album) – CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH. See, you need a good name for your band to catch people’s attention and stick in their memories, instead of a meaningless ...
